ASTM C1550 Flexural Toughness of Fiber Reinforced Concrete

The requirements of ASTM C1550-10a for determining the flexural strength of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) present several challenges for most standard test systems in use today. Specifically:

Specimen size: At 800 mm (31.5 in) in diameter, most existing load test frames do not have sufficient test space width to accommodate this size.

Required rigidity of the frame: The extra-wide test frame, including all load transmission components, must also have low deflection under load.

Accurate specimen deflection measurement: Specimen deflection must be accurately measured, either by a fixed mounted measurement device or by correcting for punch position for machine compliance under load.

Complex data analysis: The standard requires detailed analysis of the load vs. deflection data to ensure accurate reporting of flexural toughness. For most load test systems, the required analysis involves exporting the data to a spreadsheet or other analysis tool to generate the test results.

Instron has provided a variety of test systems to companies in North America to meet these challenges. Each system is configured and equipped to meet the specific needs of the customer, but each has the following in common:

A robust load frame with a wide test space that accommodates round panels up to 800 mm diameter x 75 mm thick

Grips and measuring equipment to perform ASTM C1550 and ASTM C1609 tests.

Lixian servo controllers enable advanced displacement and load control.

Universal software serves as the user interface for test setup, control, and results display and management.

Each system is capable of performing the required tests efficiently and accurately, with no user interaction required other than pressing the start button. Once the test is complete, Universal performs all data analysis required by ASTM C1550-10a and displays the results on screen for operator evaluation.
